HISTORICAL THEOLOGY SEMINAR HELD AT JMTI
Logos Ministries conducted a two-day seminar on Historical Theology from Thursday, 18 June to Friday, 19 June 2026 at Josophat Mwale Theological Institute (JMTI), located on the Nkhoma Synod Campus in Lilongwe. The seminar focused on the theme: "Understanding Historical Theology in the Modern Church."
The training aimed to equip church leaders and ministry workers with a deeper understanding of the historical development of Christian doctrine and its relevance to contemporary church life. Historical theology helps the church understand how Christian beliefs have been shaped throughout history and how those beliefs can be faithfully expressed in today's context. It also assures that Christ continues to fulfil His promises to His people and enables the church to distinguish biblical orthodoxy from heresy.
Speaking during the seminar, the National Director of Logos Ministries, Mr Manuel Kamnkhwani, expressed gratitude to the JMTI ministers-in-training for their commitment and willingness to participate in the program. He emphasised that understanding historical theology is essential for the modern church because it helps believers connect past theological controversies and heresies with contemporary challenges. This understanding enables the church to confront error with truth, doing so in a spirit of love and faithfulness to Scripture.
The seminar was facilitated by Pastor Toby Kurth, Lead Pastor of Christ Church in San Francisco, North America. Pastor Kurth planted Christ Church in San Francisco and has faithfully served the congregation since its inception.
His academic studies and ministry experience have shaped a deep conviction that the contemporary church is profoundly indebted to the theological heritage of the global church throughout the centuries. He highlighted the significant contributions made by Christians from different regions of the world, including the foundational theological work of the African Church Fathers.
The seminar brought together approximately 37 participants, including Logos Ministries staff members, who actively engaged in discussions and learning sessions throughout the two-day event.
